Salmon Fishing in Scotland River Luce
|
O.S. Map 82
The Water of Luce
forms by the joining of the Cross Water of Luce and the Main Water
of Luce. The Main Water is now dammed to form Penwhirn Reservoir and
the river is now subject to compensation flow. The fishing has
suffered as a result. Nevertheless, the river still produces a fair
number of salmon, although sea trout runs are not what they once
were.

Salmon Fishing on the River Luce
|
|
Sea Trout have declined markedly in recent years but the salmon fishing
can be good at times, with around 100 salmon caught in a season. Most of
the fishing is let by Stair Estates to regular tenants but visitors may
gain access to fishing on approximately eight miles of the Cross Water
of Luce through the Stranraer and District Angling Club. Permits are
available from various local hotels or by application to Mr J
Greenhill, 20 Challoch Crescent, Stranraer.

Please note that these maps may date back several decades.
Much of the human detail will have changed but the character of the rivers and
lochs, and the trout and salmon in them, will be much the same as they have
always been.
In addition to the information provided
here, I would recommend that anyone planning a fishing or
walking trip in Scotland should equip themselves with a compass
and the appropriate Ordnance Survey map. The most useful of the
O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale
1:50,000. For each of the lochs and rivers listed here, I have given the
relevant O.S. Map number. See Ordnance
