SEA TROUT FISHING

Salmon Fishing in Scotland River Bladnoch

O.S. Map 83

The River Bladnoch flows from Mayberry Loch in South Ayrshire for seven miles to Wigtown Bay. The river has been affected by large scale afforestation and the river now falls quickly following a spate. Salmon and sea trout run the river, which also holds good brown trout and pike.

Salmon Fishing on the River Bladnoch

Around 200 salmon are taken in a season, some of them of impressive size, the largest being a fish of 34 pounds taken in 1972. The Bladnoch maintains a good spring run of salmon and these fish arrive from late February onwards. A large proportion of the fish caught are taken between February and May, afterwards September and October tend to be the most productive months. Newton Stewart and District Angling Association have water on the upper river.

The maps on this website have been reproduced with the permission of Collins Bartholomew.

Please note that these maps may date back several decades. Much of the human detail will have changed but the character of the rivers and lochs, and the trout and salmon in them, will be much the same as they have always been.

In addition to the information provided here, I would recommend that anyone planning a fishing or walking trip in Scotland should equip themselves with a compass and the appropriate Ordnance Survey map. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For each of the lochs and rivers listed here, I have given the relevant O.S. Map number. See Ordnance Survey Maps
