                        Fishing Hotels in Scotland

Scotland is blessed with a wonderful variety of game fishing. Scottish fishing may mean different things to different fishermen, depending on the nature of his particular piscatorial obsession.

The salmon fisherman might dream of fishing a famous beat on one of the renowned big four rivers, of casting a fly on the hallowed streams of the Dee, Spey, Tweed or Tay. Or he may see himself on the heather fringed banks of our wild northern salmon streams, casting a fly to summer grilse on the Naver, Dionard, Halladale or Borgie. The sea trout fisherman might dream of long productive drifts on west highland lochs or of soft summer nights on the middle beats of the Spey or Esk or Nith.  The brown trout man may find his paradise in the lochs of Sutherland or Orkney or Lewis or on the banks of the Don, Clyde or Tweed. While it is true that much of the best of Scottish salmon fishing is still a very private affair, reserved for the exclusive use of its owners or their privileged guests, and inaccessible to the angler of average means, the visitor to Scotland will nevertheless find many excellent opportunities for trout, salmon and sea trout fishing, much of it available through the managing estates, through local fishing clubs and associations or in conjunction with accommodation in the many traditional Scottish fishing hotels, which will happily cater for the very specific needs of visiting anglers. Such specialist hotels will be able to provide for the visiting fisherman's every need, advising prospective visitors on the fishing conditions, allocating fishing beats, adjusting meal times to fit the fishing timetable, providing packed lunches, or arranging the services of gillies to help the angler make the most of his fishing week.

Ben Loyal Hotel

The Ben Loyal Hotel lies at the heart of the Land of Clan MacKay, overlooked by the crenellated ridge of Ben Loyal (764m), 'Queen of Scottish Mountains'. Elaine and Paul Lewis own and manage the hotel and they and their friendly staff will ensure that you find sanctuary and peace here, free from the stress of modern living. Our Head Chef, Liz Williamson has won the Ben an AA Rosette with the excellence of her cooking. The dining room offers not only fine food and wines but also an unforgettable view over the Kyle of Tongue, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope and the ruin of Castle Varrich that sits on the hill line opposite the hotel.

The following fishing is available to both residents and non-residents of the hotel.

The Ben Loyal has a beat on the South End of Loch Hope for sea trout and salmon fishing.   In 2006 hire of the boat plus 2 rods is £70 per day.   The beats rotate each day through the 3 beats available on South End.   It is advisable to have a ghillie and we recommend Mr Creighton who can be contacted on 01549 402333.

From the hotel you can purchase permits to fish for the fighting brown trout of Sutherland and sea trout on the Tongue and District Angling Club waters. The following lochs are available to Tongue Angling Club permit holders:

Loch Loyal (Boats available) Loch Haken (Boats available)
Loch Bhuoaidh Loch Craggie (Boats available)
Loch Cormach (Boat available) Loch na Arigh Buie
Loch a Mhuilinn Loch Bealach na Sgeulachd (Boat available)

The Kyle of Tongue estuary is part of the Tongue and District Angling Club waters from Causeway Bridge to Kinloch.   Excellent sea trout fishing can be had when the shoals are running. Despite continuing reporting of massive reductions in stocks of West Coast sea trout, this particular inlet appears unaffected. The season runs from 11th February to 31st October. It can be fished with fly or spinner.

Angling Club rates for 2006:

Daily permit:   £6.00
Weekly permit:   £20
Annual permit:   £30

Boat Hire:   £15 per day or £56 per week (it is advisable to book boats in advance at the height of the brown trout season.)
Loch Hope

Engine Hire:   £12 per day or £35 per week

Permits are available from the hotel and boats and engines must be booked through the hotel  and all catches from Tongue Angling Club lochs must be reported to the hotel for record purposes.

Fishing is available on the ticket water of the River Borgie from the sea, up to the Borgie Hotel at approximately £12 per day.   Contact the water bailiff on 01641 521255.   Private beats (4) at two rods per beat are also available from April to September.   Please contact Mather Jamie, Rectory Place, Loughborough, Leics on 01509 233433 for further information.

Permits for the Ticket waters of  the River Naver are available from The Store in Bettyhill.   Please contact them directly on 01641 521407.

Please note that apart from the hotel’s beat on South End of Loch Hope and the Tongue and District Angling Club that all prices are indicative and may vary from those quoted.
